From Gouda we bike through the Krimpenerwaard where time seems to be standing still. The land, also known as polders, in this area is situated about two meters below sea level. It was originally destined for peat extraction, but this plan was abandoned in the 1800s.

In Gouderak, we visit a genuine cheese farm (optional activity). Here you will be invited to taste real Gouda cheese, and the farmer explains how it is produced in the traditional way.

In Krimpen aan de Lek we take the ferry to the windmills of Kinderdijk. Since 1997, these windmills are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. They were built to maintain the polder’s water level. A path leads you past all the windmills, to see them up close and take some nice photographs.
